I'm back to provide my US Soccer update. Yay!
For those of you who didn't see, the US team ended up winning the Gold Cup tournament by beating Mexico in the finals 2- 1. The team never looked great, but they definitely played well enough to win.
Now they team is moving on to the CONMEBOL Copa America (America Cup). This South American tournament has a lot tougher competition than the Gold Cup did, and both the US and Mexico received guest invites to participate. Because they just finished one tournament, the US team is taking a very different roster to Venezuela. You can read more about their prospects here, but it should be really interesting (and a little scary) to see how the inexperienced team fares against the much tougher competition. To see how much tougher, check out the FIFA World Ranking of the teams that the US (#16) has or will face in these tournaments:
Gold Cup: Mexico - #26, Canada, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago - All Unranked
Copa America: Argentina - #5, Columbia - #31, Paraguay - #37
To start things off, the US faces Argentina tonight, so we'll get to see early on how these teams look. I'll keep you posted.
